Responsibilities/Duties:
The Occupational Hygienist in Occupational Safety Services is a professional position reporting to the Lead, WH&S Hygiene & Ergonomics. Responsibilities include: The design, implementation and management of occupational hygiene programs Development of strategies for evaluating work environments to determine degree of risk Collection and analysis of samples to assess worker exposure to physical, chemical and biological agents Evaluate the effectiveness of control strategies implemented to protect against worker exposure and hazards Employee the use of direct reading instruments, sampling equipment and other methods to measure level of light, heat, noise, etc. Determine airborne contaminants and compare them to regulatory standards and guidelines and accepted occupational exposure criteria Regularly conduct exposure surveys to assess the degree of risk and determine requirements for remedial action Report and document investigations, audits and conclusions Design and/or recommend appropriate engineering controls, improved work procedures and protective equipment Develop and implement a procedural mechanism for including controls as part of planning new processes and changes in existing processes Review all present and future regulations, standards to ensure compliance Assist in or conduct investigations into suspected work-related health problems Work in multi-disciplinary teams in the development, maintenance and enhancement of WH&S policies, programs, processes, training, etc.
Qualifications A minimum of a degree in occupational hygiene or related area plus appropriate license or other recognized designation is preferred. A minimum of 5 years in workplace health and safety in an organization of significant size, complexity and diversity is preferred (healthcare experience an asset). A demonstrated clear pattern of professional and personal development. Equivalencies of education and experience may be considered.
