  Responsibilities/Duties:
The Occupational Hygienist in Occupational Safety Services is a professional position reporting to the Lead, WH&S Hygiene & Ergonomics. Responsibilities include:
  • The design, implementation and management of occupational hygiene programs
  • Development of strategies for evaluating work environments to determine degree of risk
  • Collection and analysis of samples to assess worker exposure to physical, chemical and biological agents
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of control strategies implemented to protect against worker exposure and hazards
  • Employee the use of direct reading instruments, sampling equipment and other methods to measure level of light, heat, noise, etc.
  • Determine airborne contaminants and compare them to regulatory standards and guidelines and accepted occupational exposure criteria
  • Regularly conduct exposure surveys to assess the degree of risk and determine requirements for remedial action
  • Report and document investigations, audits and conclusions
  • Design and/or recommend appropriate engineering controls, improved work procedures and protective equipment
  • Develop and implement a procedural mechanism for including controls as part of planning new processes and changes in existing processes
  • Review all present and future regulations, standards to ensure compliance
  • Assist in or conduct investigations into suspected work-related health problems
  • Work in multi-disciplinary teams in the development, maintenance and enhancement of WH&S policies, programs, processes, training, etc.

    Qualifications
    A minimum of a degree in occupational hygiene or related area plus appropriate license or other recognized designation is preferred. A minimum of 5 years in workplace health and safety in an organization of significant size, complexity and diversity is preferred (healthcare experience an asset). A demonstrated clear pattern of professional and personal development. Equivalencies of education and experience may be considered.
